Is Ys VIII’s Localization Really That Bad?

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana’s English localization is apparently so bad that Japanese game sites are talking about it. People made such a stink that the President and CEO of NIS America issued a statement apologizing for the lack of localization quality and promised to have it re-edited and patched by late November.

So I wonder, is it really all that bad? I’m about to find out!

We gotta beat this game before they release the patch next month. Wish us luck! And don’t worry, we’re taking screenshots along the way.

Legends of Localization on Sup, Holmes?

The post title isn’t a question. Dan, Tony, and I were guests on the interview show “Sup, Holmes?” last year. We talked about Legends of Localization, Starmen.net, Fangamer, EarthBound, old Rev3 Games shows, and tons of other stuff that I forgot I even said, haha.

Got 2 hours to spare? Give it a watch!

Wacky Random Generators

We’re still struggling to come up with a title for the Funky Fantasy IV book. Mato got desperate and tried a random title generator…

What Could Have Been

About a year or two before I started working with Fangamer to make Legends of Localization books, I considered making books on my own. Anyone who knows me knows that my design senses are poop though, as this mega alpha first test prototype experiment PDF shows:

I think I was just seeing how the current LoL site would look if converted straight into book format. I’m glad I decided it was a bad idea. I think I also calculated it out and a Final Fantasy IV LoL book in this sort of format would’ve been around a thousand pages or more anyway ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

LoL Books at NYCC!

Fangamer’s at New York Comic-Con this weekend and our entire lineup of Legends of Localization books is there too! Pick up one/some/all of them if you’re there ๐Ÿ˜‰

A couple people have asked, so: Mato & I are not there in person. It’s crunch time for basically all of Fangamer right now, so only a small crew is at NYCC this year.

Special Mention in a New Book

A new book from Prima Games gives a special shoutout to Legends of Localization! It’s calledย Playing with Super Power: Nintendo Super NES Classics, and Fangamer got a copy of the super cool collector’s edition:

It goes in-depth on some of the most popular SNES games, including Zelda, the Marios, the Star Foxes (yeah, Star Fox 2!), aaaaand EarthBound. It’s full of facts, little-known trivia, development stories, tips from speedrunners, and even some amazing fan art! This is an incredible labor of love.

And hey, look look!

That 400-page book is us! ๐Ÿ˜€ And I can tell from reading the section on EarthBound that they got some of the information from the EB LoL book. That’s a major goal for our books, to be used as a reliable resource for stuff like this. Hooray! ๐Ÿ˜€

If you want this dang cool book, I definitely recommend the collector’s edition. Pick one up here!

Fun with the Google Translate App

Google Translate has an app for phones where it will live translate any text you point it at. I’ve been testing it out recently, and it’s … got a long way to go. Here are some of the funnier mishaps:

Mmmm, delicious flesh pocky.

Hot Nintendo Action!!!

Aw yeah, baby. We finally got this hot issue of Nintendo Comics System! Thanks to Frank Cifaldi for pointing us to a reputable seller~

I wasn’t lucky enough to grow up with these little comic books. Do y’all have any cool childhood memories of these?
