Japanese Vanilla Ice

アイス (“ice”) is the word used to describe ice cream in Japanese. It’s another one of those false friends that can be confusing and misleading. So if you ask for a “vanilla ice” in Japan, you’ll get this:


But if you ask for a “vanilla ice” in America, you’ll get something else entirely:

This is not a mistake anyone wants to make!

Game Over? Game O~HAAA!

We usually cover bad English translations, but yesterday Mato found a Switch game with a bad Japanese translation. It’s called NeuroVoider and here’s a taste:

See that text at the top? Instead of saying “Game Over”, it says Game Ōhā. Japanese gamers who saw this were making a lot of Shingo Mama “oha” jokes.

“Game Oha” was fixed already, but there are more problems throughout the game. I’ve been documenting them, so expect to see something on the main site about it soon!

The Programmer vs the Designer: Thumbnail Edition

Mato stayed up late last night working on the latest article about what Japanese fans think of the Pkmn G/S Spaceworld leak. He posted a possible thumbnail in the work chat and said “i tried but this is the best I can do 🙁 ” and asked for me or Tony to improve it. Here’s the pic Mato posted:

And then Tony, being a professional graphic designer and a lover of all things font, came up with this before I even woke up!
