Localization Issues Pervade the Ys VIII Switch Port

Whoops, YS VIII is goofin’ again. The Switch port releases next week and GameXplain did a really excellent review on it: watch it here! Their review is almost glowing, but then they point out the lack of localization polish…

Dang, what the heck happened? After all the fuss made over the PS4 version’s subpar localization (the president of NISA even issued a public apology) and the huge effort to rewrite the script and re-record all the voice acting, how did this happen?

Results of the Pokemon “Localize Me” Challenge

A week or so ago on Twitter, I challenged people to come up with a localized English name for this prototype Pokemon from the Gold/Silver demo leak:

I received a lot of good responses! Here’s a short list of some of the most popular ones (based on likes) and also some personal favorites:

  • Purrent
  • Shockat / Shockitty
  • Voltiger
  • Amplidude
  • Cirkitt
  • Ampster
  • Chubbs McFattybolt
  • Tigawatt
  • Wattashock
  • Volcub / Circub
  • Thunpurr / Zappurr
  • Bob
  • Amplirunt
  • Tiger Electronics

Of course, I ignored the character limit for the best-of list 😉 That was fun, so I might do a few more in the coming weeks.

Japanese Vanilla Ice

アイス (“ice”) is the word used to describe ice cream in Japanese. It’s another one of those false friends that can be confusing and misleading. So if you ask for a “vanilla ice” in Japan, you’ll get this:

But if you ask for a “vanilla ice” in America, you’ll get something else entirely:

This is not a mistake anyone wants to make!

Game Over? Game O~HAAA!

We usually cover bad English translations, but yesterday Mato found a Switch game with a bad Japanese translation. It’s called NeuroVoider and here’s a taste:

See that text at the top? Instead of saying “Game Over”, it says Game Ōhā. Japanese gamers who saw this were making a lot of Shingo Mama “oha” jokes.

“Game Oha” was fixed already, but there are more problems throughout the game. I’ve been documenting them, so expect to see something on the main site about it soon!

The Programmer vs the Designer: Thumbnail Edition

Mato stayed up late last night working on the latest article about what Japanese fans think of the Pkmn G/S Spaceworld leak. He posted a possible thumbnail in the work chat and said “i tried but this is the best I can do 🙁 ” and asked for me or Tony to improve it. Here’s the pic Mato posted:

And then Tony, being a professional graphic designer and a lover of all things font, came up with this before I even woke up!

Mato & I are very grateful to have Tony on our team~~
